Plymouth Student Accommodation Scheme Opens its Doors

The Pickstock Group has completed a 13 and 10 storey student accommodation block in Plymouth city centre.

Pickstock Construction acted as the main contractor on the development utilising sister company Elements Europe’s modular systems to deliver an offsite solution.

Pickstock Construction managed all aspects of the construction from the piling right through to cladding the external facade, including the install of all modules working alongside Elements Europe’s install team something that Pickstock Construction have many years of experience.

In total 349 room modules were installed into the 13 storey tower block using the site’s tower crane. Modules included studio and ensuite student rooms as well as kitchen pods for shared flats.

60 bathroom pods were also manufactured and delivered for the 10 storey block which had to be built traditionally with a concrete frame due to its unique shape. Bathroom Pods were installed into this building using a CantiDeck system to slide the pods into position.

Dave Malkin, Site Manager commented “As we have been demonstrating for years, modular construction is the way forward for this type of development. Whilst room modules were being installed into floor six electrical and mechanical trades commenced their work three floors below, working their way up the building, demonstrating the advantages and efficiencies brought through modular construction”.

Now that the building is complete, Mears Student operators will take over the building to manage the accommodation for student residents, offering a comfortable place to live and study in the city.
